The E-11A BACN has been a combatant commander’s best friend in theatre for over a decade now, even though most aviation aficionados have never heard of it. Dubbed the “WiFi in the sky,” the BACN mission is the platform tagged to replace the E-8 JSTARS and has been performing the mission for years.
The BACN mission is a natural fit for the Bombardier Global 6000 platform. Compared to other tactical missions, the task is relatively easy because it mostly calls for the aircraft to fly for extended periods of time in a racetrack pattern at a high flight level (the Global 6000 has a ceiling of 51,000'). The Global 6000, however, is ideal for this. Additionally, compared to the E-8 JSTAR it is replacing, which is still powered by four JT8D engines, it has a far more efficient overall airframe. Four BACN aircraft are in the inventory, and the total inventory will be nine aircraft once orders are complete. There would have been ten, but sadly one aircraft was lost in Afghanistan. The entire fleet will be located at Robins AFB, Georgia, which has long hosted the JSTARS mission.
