The phrase “C-130 Hercules” is ubiquitous with air mobility. Besides the whomp of a Huey, there is no other sound in the air more easily recognizable than the monotone drone of a Herc. The good thing is that you’ll have plenty of time to look for it once you hear it! Hercs have been in continuous service with the U.S. military for almost seventy years now. That’s right; the B-52 may get all the press for being so old, but the Herc has been in service for almost as long (so has the KC-135, for that matter).
While the Air Force is the prime user of the Herc, it is one of only a handful of airframes (especially tactical aircraft) used by most branches. The U.S. Army is the only branch that does not have a fleet of Hercs, although the Air Force has Herc units located at nearby Pope AFB to support Airborne operations. Hercs are also one of the most widely used aircraft by allies of the U.S., with 67 foreign nations operating them.
