The U.S. Civil Air Patrol is the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. They are a primary source of maritime aerial search and rescue (SAR) in the U.S., which includes Alaska. Their fleet boasts hundreds of fixed-wing aircraft, flying nearly 100,000 flight hours annually. The fleet is mixed but mostly composed of Cessna C172 and C182s, which are always painted in the CAP's red, white, and blue livery. The CAP has wings in all 50 states and two protectorates and has over 50,000 members nationwide. While they do have a SAR mission, the CAP is also tasked with building the future of the Air Force through community outreach. While the Cessna 172 and 182 are wonderfully reliable and tough, they are still machines that must be maintained to the highest degree. The CAP fleet’s primary purpose is for SAR work, which means that anytime an airplane is down for unscheduled maintenance, waiting on parts, etc., there is a hole in the SAR network that must be filled by someone else.
