The U.S. Navy recently awarded Greenwood Aerospace a contract for landing gear repairs on its fleets of T-34s from NAS Whiting Field and T-44s from NAS Corpus Christi. The project's total value is roughly $3.4 million and entails extensive repairs and parts replacement to keep these two fleets of aging aircraft safe and airworthy for a while longer.

T-34 Repairs

The T-34 has been a mainstay of the Naval flight training program for many years, even though it was replaced by the T-6 Texan II several years ago for primary training. With that said, the Navy maintains a fleet of T-34 Mentors for pilot proficiency purposes at NAS Whiting Field, Florida.

The scope of this contract for the T-34C fleet will have a duration of three years and will entail up to 48 landing gear components over the duration.

The landing gear components are as follows:

  • Nose Gear Assembly (P/N 104-820011-15)
  • Left-Hand Gear Assembly (P/N 104-810013-9)
  • Right-Hand Gear Assembly (P/N 104-810013-10)
  • Actuator (P/N 104-810014-7)

Once the work has commenced, it will ensure the landing gears on the aging fleet of Mentors will remain robust and safe for years to come.

T-44 Repairs

While the Navy has announced a replacement for the T-44 in the T-54A (which is the Beechcraft King Air 260), it is still several years away from implementation. In the meantime, Naval flight operations will continue to train day-in-and-day-out in the T-44.

The scope of the T-44 landing gear contract will also be a three-year duration and will overhaul up to 378 landing gear components at a rate of 128 components per year.
