Alongside the venerable C-12 Huron, the most common sight on the red carpet at most military airfields is Cessna Citation Vs, otherly known as a UC-35. While not nearly as well-aged as the Super King Airs, the Citation V is familiar to the scene, with its first flight some 33 years ago. The Army has used UC-35s as a core part of its Operational Support Aircraft (OSA) fleet since the late 1980s. While the total count of UC-35s in the Army inventory is unknown, it represents a sizeable portion of the OSA fleet, although the C-12 still holds the lion’s share of missions.
The U.S. Marine Corps is the only other user of UC-35s in the military, operating designations as the UC-35C (Citation Ultra), and the UC-35D (Citation Encore). The Army also operates both Ultras and Encores, which are the UC-35A and UC-35B, respectively.
Citation Ultras are a two-pilot jet and can carry up to eleven passengers, although that full count of passengers diminishes the available range of the flight. With a modest payload of passengers, the Ultra provides a nearly 2,000nm range ring, which allows VIPs to travel non-stop for the East Coast to most CONUS locations. With age does come inevitable breakage. These aircraft are indeed getting older, so you need a solid supply chain to keep them in top condition.
