While it gets no attention from the sleeker parts of the training fleet, namely the dart-like T-38, the T-1A Jayhawk, known colloquially to its operators as the “Tone,” has refined thousands of mobility pilots' skills. The T-1A is an incredible asset to the fleet. Using an FMS nearly identical to the KC-135, mobility track pilots can transition smoothly out of the Tone and into the next stage of their training, which is follow-on training in the airframe they’ve been selected for. Up until the early 1990s, all Air Force student pilots followed their portion in Tweet by flying the T-38. The T-38 is a wonderful introductory aircraft for fighter and bomber track pilots, but it shares little in common with the mobility fleet. Also, the T-38 tends to wash out pilots who would be perfectly fine operating in mobility aircraft but cannot quite make the cut for fighters.
Enter the Beechjet/Hawker 400.
The Hawker 400 business jet is an ideal size and has a great performance envelope for flight training. Stable and forgiving, the T-1A also boasts desirable features like air conditioning, which any pilot flying out of Enid, Oklahoma, or Columbus AFB in Alabama will appreciate. Pilot training in the Air Force demands a fanatical adherence to the syllabus. There are no days off ‘just because.’ This goes for both student pilots and airplanes.
